Welder qualification thickness, diameter - AWS D1.1

Dear Experts,

I have got a welder who has welded on a 14" Pipe Wall thickness of 25.4 mm in 6G position SMAW using E7018 electrode with Single V Butt Joint.
The root pass was 6 mm and the SMAW weld deposit was 19.4 mm

The range to which he is qualified is as follows as per my interpretation.

Position - ALL (Table 4.10)
SMAW process - with Backing ONLY (Table 4.12)
F No. - 1,2,3,4 (Table 4.12)
Thickness qualified - 5 mm to unlimited either on Pipe or Plate (Table 4.11 point 2)
Pipe Diameter qualified - 7" to unlimited (Table 4.11 note e)

Request your comments please.

Thanks.

Wefel,

Assuming all things remain same as per my first query except the combination of processes which now is GTAW/FCAW instead of GTAW/SMAW as originally was,
Would the qualified range be as follows:-

Position - ALL (Table 4.10)
FCAW process - with Backing ONLY (Table 4.12)
F No. - 1,2,3,4,5,6 (Table 4.12)
Thickness qualified - 5 mm to unlimited either on Pipe or Plate (Table 4.11 point 2)
Pipe Diameter qualified - 7" to unlimited (Table 4.11 note e)

Your comments please.

I agree with all of them except the comment regarding F-number since it is applicable only for the SMAW process. Please have a look at the table 4.12, variable 2. So, for the qualification range of welder, there is no reason to consider the F-number of welding consumable of FCAW process.

Hi, Wefel,
I agree with you, that was intentional, as FCAW will always be F6.

Thanks again

Hi, Wefel,

Just wanted to reconfirm with you, Is my interpretation of the Pipe Diameter correct, or should it be 100mm (4") OD as minimum instead of 7".

Thanks

According to table 4.11, note e: "the minimum pipe size qualified shall be 1/2 the test diameter or 4 inches, whichever is greater". In your case the test diameter is 14 inches and since 7 greater of 4 then you qualify for 7 inches to unlimited pipe diameter.
